Maraldi Sementi confirms commitment to innovative baby leaf varieties

After the field days at the beginning of December in the Piana del Sele at Valcalcer company, Maraldi Sementi presented his range of materials for Spanish and international markets. On the days of 3rd, 4th and 5th March at Pareje Santa Rosalia, Torre Pacheco (Murcia), Maraldi Sementi, in collaboration with Unigen Seeds Spain/Akira Seeds, distributor for Spain, showed with repeated sowing, 56 different varieties.

All new materials specifically bred to offer innovation, resistances to pathogens, processability and maximum shelf life. Offering in this way needed quality for a dynamic and competitive market such as the baby leaf market.

Main players invited from all Spanish production areas visited numerous the field and showed great interest for the wide range of materials sown. Many new releases were present at the field, as first a wide and complete, for types and segments, range of lettuces. Here are just some of the varieties shown, all (HR) BI: 16-36 EU, specifically selected for the best performance in density cultivation from baby leaf cutting, erect habit, excellent dry matter content for yield and shelf life.

In addition to above, Maraldi confirmed his constant commitment to satisfying the needs of the processors, making it possible to see on the field varieties that offer elasticity, low sensitivity to the stress of washing and packaging and materials selected to ensure maximum shelf life thanks to the reduced susceptibility to oxidation at the cutting points.

Twist MSX 19399

Twist MSX 19399 indented lettuce type, combines the crunchiness of an Iceberg lettuce with high leaf count and consequent production potential. Well noted by our guests the ability to fill the bag without adhering to the plastic film, a feature highly appreciated. (HR) BI: 16-36 EU.

Red Tip, Red Rocket and Oxana

Red Tip: Red oak leaf lettuce. The early cycle made this lettuce particularly suited to be grown during cold cycles. (HR) BI: 16-36 EU.

Red Rocket (MSX 18169): Erect leaves with long petiole, particularly  indicated to facilitate cutting. Visitors appreciated the dark color and the thickness of the leaves, the crunchiness and lobed shape of the leaves. (HR) BI: 16-36 EU.

Oxana: certainly, one of the darkest red leaf varieties on the market. Its adaptability makes Oxana perfect for summer, spring and autumn cycles. Erect petiole and the shape of the stem help to perform even
second cut of excellent quality. (HR) BI: 16-36 EU.

Icebeat (MSX 18485)

Icebeat (MSX 18485): Iceberg lettuce with deeply indented leaf margin. The crunchiness, consistency and pleasantness of the flavor, confirm the main processors, make this lettuce one of the most recognizable and value-added products for innovative mixes. (HR) BI: 16-36 EU.

An important space has been reserved for rockets. Maraldi Sementi is one of the first companies to have launched hybrid rockets, materials that introduce improvement in productivity and tolerance to plant diseases, leaves that are more uniformly serrated even at the first cut, all vigorous constitutions capable of increasing yield ensuring cycle and cutting uniformity.

On the numerous varieties shown in the trials, 3 has particularly catch the growers interest:

Sele F1

Sele F1: Hybrid rocket innovative in yield potential, it has a very serrated and voluminous leaf with a unique consistency, high leaf count and excellent results in the field for tolerance to downy mildew.

Juno: variety with very erect habit, tall petiole and dark green leaf color. Medium early cycle with low susceptibility to downy mildew, excels in post-harvest.

MSX 84122 F1

MSX 84122 F1: this hybrid rocket is characterized by the low susceptibility to downy mildew, rapid cycle with great vigor, the leaves are erect and with a well-indented margin, high yield.

The wide range of red chard, part of the Maraldi portfolio, was also been well represented in this demo field. Following two of the red chards among those that our guests in Murcia have been able to appreciate.

Venus F1: Perform at the best in cold periods thanks to the early cycle and the excellent tolerance to leaf bleeding. Yield significantly above average is a feature well noted by guests too.

Venus F1, and Jupiter F1

Jupiter F1: darker and rounded leaf with intense red veins and petioles, Jupiter maintains an excellent quality standard as well as excellent yield even in hot periods.

The heterogeneity and the attractive aspect that brassicas can add to the baby leaf mixes, made the plots of these materials, among the firsts inspected by our interesting visitors.

Maradi sementi works on brassica genetic improvement in order to add tolerance to downy mildew, improving the leaf quality attribute; Here are just a few of the most interesting brassicas present on the
demo field.

Kale Green MSX2019 F1

Kale Green MSX2019 F1: traditional kale improved in uniformity, due to its darker color, erect habit, high vigor and tolerance to downy mildew. All said made this kale one of the most appreciated brassicas among the wide number of materials present on the field.

Pak Choi Red Moon F1, a destra Mizuna Sunrise F1

Pak Choi Red Moon F1: Red Moon F1 has a very dark purple color, a great yielding potential thanks to the thickness of the leaf foil and petiole. Suitable for production all year round.

Mizuna Sunrise F1: heavily indented leaves give to this mizuna a unique appearance which, together with the very dark color, make Sunrise F1 an indispensable ingredient in the most innovative mixes. The elasticity of the plant ensures the possibility to grow Sunrise F1 all year round.
