"We hope good weather will accompany the start of the Spanish harvest"

Hardly any demand for watermelon

The coronavirus crisis has strongly affected watermelon sales, as the demand for this product has almost dropped completely. "In many European countries, such as Spain, authorities have applied confinement measures or mobility limitations, among other restrictions. That's why most consumers shop for several days and try to hoard as much food as possible. Watermelons are not an option when compared to other types of fruit because they are bigger and heavier," stated Victor Gonzalez, from the Marketing and Communication department of Grupo Fashion.

"We are currently bringing our watermelon from Senegal, although in very small quantities compared to the watermelon we grow in Spain. Sales in the Horeca channel have disappeared, sales in wholesale markets have suffered greatly, and consumption is generally low," he stated.

The Spanish watermelon harvest is expected to start in mid-April in Almeria. The weather during winter has been very mild and the harvest is expected to come early this year. However, the rains of the last few days could slightly adjust the harvest dates.

"We will begin to have significant volumes to be able to supply the large distribution chains starting in May. However, this situation leaves us with a lot of uncertainty. We hope that the sun and heat will accompany us, otherwise, the start of this year's watermelon campaign could be very complicated," Victor Gonzalez added.
