Leonard Kampschoer, FruitMasters:

"It is our duty, along with our buyers, to maintain the food supply"

"This corona crisis is a tragedy for everyone. It is up to our sector to keep the food supply going. Even in these uncertain times, during this virus outbreak, people must be kept fed. We have, therefore, noticed that, up to now, there has been a run on the entire fruit category", says Leonard Kampschoer, FruitMasters' Commercial Director. "It is not the time to discuss price hikes at this stage. It is purely about maintaining the supply of food."

"We are, therefore, appointing staff in places such as packing stations. But, also at the farms, where they are prepared to keep sorting produce. We have had no-one leave, and the group is highly-motivated. They will do everything in their power to make sure the food supply chain remains open. Protecting our employees takes the highest priority. We have taken strict measures to ensure this. You need people to be healthy to be able to do their jobs."

"When supermarkets are busy, all the suppliers are too. We have also noticed very stable top fruit sales across the entire category. The Dutch soft fruit season still needs to start. People are eating at home more now. But, the supermarkets and greengrocers are taking over the foodservice industry's sales. No-one knows if this situation will continue. It is, however, essential that everyone obeys the governmental regulations. With these, we must try and control this virus. And in this way, we can retain our freedom," concludes Leonard.
