Catalan producers promote the consumption of artichokes in view of the closure of the hospitality industry

The closure of the hospitality sector decreed in Spain due to the spread of the coronavirus has caused many industries to lose their main customers. One of them has been the cooperative Agrícola de El Prat, which has suffered a "collapse" in the sales of Prat artichokes "in the middle of the season" and a significant drop in their prices, which may entail the loss of 70% of the production. Because of this, the cooperative is encouraging the population to consume this "healthy and versatile" product.

In a statement, Agrícola de El Prat, which brings together around thirty growers, has asked the citizens of the Barcelona Metropolitan Area to consume artichokes in their regular meals, stressing that the crop is "rich in fibre and antioxidants and contains natural cholesterol-controlling elements that help prevent heart disease."

In the context of the state of alarm, the cooperative has underlined the effort that farming families are making to continue to supply fresh, local produce from the Baix Llobregat Agricultural Park to all establishments and markets.
