Pears are continuing to ship from Argentina, though this commodity is another one that could possibly be affected by the circumstances around the COVID-19 Virus.
“This situation changed with coronavirus. Under a normal situation, this season was perfect. But now, nobody knows what will happen,” says Damian Segal with Bfruits based in Miami, FL. Bfruits ships varieties such as Anjou, Bartletts, Red Anjous and Red Bartletts and says there are currently good supplies available on all of these varieties.
Pears from Argentina began shipping in January to the US and the loads begin wrapping up in April. “We’re continuing to ship pears at the same levels as before. However, the growers are starting to stop production,” says Segal. As reported the other day, Customs and the National Agricultural Food Health and Quality Service haven't applied any measures due to the coronavirus (Senasa) and the country's borders are open. However, measures are expected).
What will demand look like?
While demand was less than expected this season for pears, now due to greater shopping levels for groceries in retail outlets throughout North America, it’s unknown how demand will develop.
The same applies to pricing. “We were supposed to have good pricing on pears this year because the US had less stock and Italy and Europe also had 50 percent less crop on pears. The price should be good,” says Segal.
