"Guanxi honey pomelos blossomed early this year"

The weather is gradually warming up and the Guanxi honey pomelo production areas in Pinghe are gradually entering the blossoming season. Manager Zhang, a spokesperson for specialized Guangxi honey pomelo exporter Pinghe County Huaermei Fruit Industry Co., Ltd., recently talked about current conditions in the honey pomelo industry.

"The spring this year is warm. In some parts of Fujian the pomelo trees started to blossom in the middle of February. This year will be a great year for pomelo," said manager Zhang. "Based on the large numbers of pomelo flowers this year, we can expect the production volume to greatly expand in comparison with last year, provided that the weather conditions remain regular."

Manager Zhang further explained: "The overall surface area devoted to pomelo plantation in Pinghe production areas did not significantly change in comparison with last year."

"The retail season of honey pomelo is already over and the trees are slowly growing the new harvest. This means that the need for labor is relatively low at the moment. The ongoing COVID-19 epidemic therefore has a relatively small impact on the honey pomelo industry."

When asked about the impact of the COVID-19 epidemic in Europe on Chinese pomelo export, manager Zhang replied,"this development worries me. However, the pomelo export season generally starts in the middle of August when the harvest begins. We still have almost half a year before the new pomelo enter the market. I believe that conditions will have improved by then. The pomelo export market should then be alright as well."

Huaermei Fruit Industry mainly exports pomelo to Europe and Canada. The company exports 3-4 thousand tons of honey pomelo per year. "A growing number of companies entered the pomelo industry. Competition is growing more intense. This also puts pressure on the price of pomelo. We have constructed our own processing facility in Pinghe, which covers 13 hectares, to guarantee the highest product quality for our customers and respond to growing competition in the industry. We can process the pomelo immediately after the fruit is harvested and in accordance with specific requirements from our customers. We then sell and delivery directly from our plantation. We hope to reduce the number of intermediaries and thus keep the cost price low. This in turn will give us a price advantage in this crowded market," explained manager Zhang.
