Aptar presents anti-pathogenic food packaging solution

US-based Aptar Food and Beverage, a part of AptarGroup, has unveiled an anti-pathogenic packaging solution to protect fresh cut produce. The InvisiShield platform can be integrated into sealed packages to prevent the growth of bacteria, fungi or virus on the food product, as well as reduce contamination risks.

After sealing, the solution releases a specially formulated amount of an anti-pathogenic agent in the food package to prevent pathogenic growth. The agent dissipates from the package within 24-48 hours of activation.

InvisiShield leverages 3-Phase Activ-Polymer technology to ensure safety of the packaged foods. Patented by Aptar CSP Technologies, the 3-Phase Activ-Polymer technology is designed to increase shelf life and maintain freshness of the products.

Aptar CSP Technologies president John Belfance told “We are extremely proud of our technology and the tremendous amount of work that has led to this launch. We have material science expertise that we are applying to food safety solutions at a critical time when consumers are demanding better and healthier food packaging outcomes.”

The InvisiShield technology can be integrated into existing or new produce packaging lines. According to the company, the solution is up to 99.9% effective against common food-borne pathogens. Currently, the technology is piloted by US-based Royal Fresh Cuts, which plans to begin commercial usage of the product in the next quarter.
