Due to the abnormally warm winter, the impact of diseases affecting grapes has intensified in Ukraine, as reported to AgroPortal.ua by Andrey Karpushev, head of "Karpushev A. V."
According to him, cold winters kill fungal diseases, while warm ones, on the contrary, contribute to their spread.
"Frost-resistant varieties that can withstand temperatures as low as -25 °C get rid of fungi when blown by cold winds. Because of the warm winter, these all stay in the plants. Therefore, producers will have to double or even triple their treatments in spring and in summer," he said.
In his opinion, the volume of the 2020 harvest will not be significantly affected, but its quality will be reduced. It will be worse than it would have been after a cold winter.
“There is a threat that the grape harvest will be halved on some farms,” he said.
