Jorge Valenzuela, Fedefruta

"We are coordinating actions to ensure food supply in Chile"

Jorge Valenzuela Trebilcock, the president of the Federation of Fruit Producers of Chile (Fedefruta), issued a statement about the global and national emergency caused by the spread of COVID-19, which has caused Chile to currently be in Phase 4 containment:

"The first thing to state is that the most important thing today is the Chileans' health. The spread of COVID-19 is a major problem and Chile is currently living key days to contain the spread of this disease as much as possible. To do this, we will abide by the appropriate measures to protect the lives of people, and of all those who work in our sector."

"We are also coordinating actions with the entire supply chain, which met this morning with the Minister of Agriculture, Antonio Walker, to ensure the supply of perishable food for the population, and to make sure the production chain doesn't stop working."

"Even though the emergency has stopped many industries worldwide, the large countries that receive our products still have their doors open for the entry of our fruit. What we are concerned about is the health of agricultural workers, so it is extremely important that companies and officials rigorously follow the instructions that experts and professionals in risk prevention give in the fields and facilities, to avoid the spread of the virus. As a union, we put ourselves at the disposal of the health authority to work in the best way in all the measures that are dictated."

"We also want to emphasize that COVID-19 is not transmitted through food, so the entire Chilean population and our buyers can feel safe with our products. We are in the midst of harvesting table grapes, apples, pears, and kiwis, among other fruits, and we hope that people take advantage of their health attributes and vitamins."
