The association of Fruit Producing and Exporting Companies of Andalusia, Asociafruit, stated that the area destined for the production of early new potatoes had increased by 10% in the current planting season when compared to the area last year.
The association estimates that, based on seed import data, the early areas of Cartagena and Western Andalusia will have more than 1,000 hectares more devoted to the production of new potatoes in this campaign than in 2019. According to official data from both autonomous communities, both early areas had 10,500 hectares of potatoes last season.
According to Luis Marin, the director of the association, this increase in area is mainly due to the increase in new very early potato varieties planted in Cartagena (last November) and in Seville (in the first fortnight of December). The sector will cover the demand of national supermarket chains that have stated they will switch to the new potato as soon as it is available, Marin stated.
