India: South Kashmir growers are still waiting for compensation

Orchardists in south Kashmir are worried as they have yet to receive the compensation due to last year’s lock-down, followed by the unseasonal snowfall.

The Kashmir Horticulture department suggest that about Kashmir’s economy is dependent on the apple industry and nearly 40 percent of valley’s population is associated with this sector.

But the horticultural sector, the back bone of economy in Jammu-Kashmir, suffered huge losses due to untimely snowfall in year 2018 and 2019, besides the threats of violence from militants.

Figures also suggest that in year 2018, losses to horticulture sector due to untimely snowfall on 3 November was estimated at over Rs 5 bln while as in year 2019, losses to horticulture sector were estimated to be over four times the losses in 2018.
