According to the Regional Directorate of Agriculture of Ica (DRA Ica), the department of Ica produced 22% of the 41,514 tons of artichokes (canned and frozen) that Peru exported in 2019, i.e. 9,133 tons.
To obtain this volume it was necessary to process 27,018 tons of artichoke as raw material, that is, only 33.8% of the product, considering that only the heart of the vegetable is used.
According to the entity, 97.5% (8,900 tons) of the total artichokes exported by Ica in 2019 corresponded to canned products and 2.5% (245 tons) to frozen products.
According to DRA Ica, the canned artichokes were mainly directed to the United States, Spain, France, Germany, and Canada, among other markets. The main exporting companies were Agroindustrias AIB, IQF del Peru, and Viru.
They also stated that in recent years the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) had presented initiatives to boost the export of Peruvian artichokes but with few significant results.
