The cold and wet weather ensures a very gradual supply of Dutch asparagus for the time being. "I expect that the asparagus from the heated cultivation and the mini tunnels, not to overlap this year. There needs to be a lot of sunshine for a few weeks. Hopefully we will have enough asparagus till Easter to serve everyone. That will be the main tension this year, "said Rick Mengers of ZON.
Rick: "So far, the spring has gone better in terms of price than last year. The prices are currently 17% higher. The prices for double A-asparagus have so far been running around 10 euros and these are prices that we can be satisfied with. Dutch supermarkets are attracted and there is also a reasonable appetite for asparagus coming from Belgium. All in all, the outlook is positive. But the volumes are still limited. If we receive two tons of double A asparagus every day, that would count as a lot."
"The German growers are also late this year. In particular, the supply from certain regions in East Germany will be low this year, due to the plants there, have hardly survived after two dry years, without other watering possibilities," says the asparagus seller. The asparagus area at ZON has reduced by nearly 50 hectares this year, mainly as a result of the closure of older growers. The cooperative thus follows the national trend." But at the same time, we are seeing that young asparagus growers are working hard!"
