China: The price of red onions is expected to fall in the next few weeks

"The onion harvest in Yunnan, one of the main onion production areas in China, began two weeks ago. The onion harvest in Sichuan will also begin at the end of March. The price of red onions is expected to fall in the next few weeks as the result of several different developments." This is according to Mr. Zhang Shuhan of Jining Greenstream Fruits and Vegetables Co., Ltd. who recently shared his views on current conditions in the red onion market.

"Onions from Yunnan have already entered the market. The overall surface area devoted to onion plantation in Yunnan significantly expanded in comparison with last year. The expansion is estimated at 30%. The current purchase price of red onions from Yunnan is around 3 times the purchase price of last year. The price rapidly increased as a result of the COVID-19 epidemic. Many farmers raise their prices and are reluctant to sell their stock. The harvest itself experienced significant delay in comparison with last year. The onion harvest in Yunnan may not have finished entirely when the onion harvest in Sichuan begins. The percentage of onions suitable for commerce is relatively low in Yunnan. The onions easily sprout. The price of onions from Yunnan is relatively high, but as soon as the onions from Sichuan enter the market, that price is expected to adjust," explained manager Zhang.

"Overseas customers prefer red onions from Pakistan over Chinese red onions. Although the price of red onions from Pakistan is relatively high, their product quality is great. In addition, India will begin exporting onions again on the 15th of March. The onion production areas in India enjoyed abundant harvests this year and their prices are relatively low. Overseas buyers are already eyeing the Indian export market and placing advance orders. The export price of Chinese onions is therefore expected to take a dive in the next few months," according to manager Zhang.

Jining Greenstream Fruits and Vegetables has been in the onion export business for more than 20 years. "We export around 2 thousand tons of onions every year. We mainly export our onions to North America, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and Russia. Our export volume is quite stable. This year, while we continue to maintain close relations with loyal clients, we also hope to gain a foothold in the European market. We are particularly eager to cooperate with onion buyers in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom," said manager Zhang.
