Atacama's Investigative Police are investigating the death of four workers in a pre-cold chamber of the Atacama Fruticola company, located in the Nantoco sector in the municipality of Tierra Amarilla, for reasons still unknown.
The person in charge of the refrigerator found the four dead and a man still alive when he arrived at the facilities to work in the morning. The Emergency Service, Firefighters, Police, PDI, and the prosecutor of Copiapo, Christian Gonzalez, were immediately contacted to initiate the investigation.
“The cause of death is being investigated. Our preliminary theory is that they died from inhaling carbon monoxide from the forklift cranes that the workers manipulated in the pre-cold chambers, where they were resting,” said prosecutor Christian Gonzalez. "The Investigation Police is responsible for the analysis of the autopsy, chemical, and biological expertise."
Christian Gonzalez also added that: "Everything related to the company will be investigated, referring to the verticality of the command, internal responsibilities, prevention actions, and joint committee, in addition to the training received by the workers."
The company's labor documents were seized and made available to the Labor Directorate to investigate whether the people were in charge of personnel complied with the regulations regarding safety measures and the supervision of the workers' work.
