Philippines: Prices of onions & garlic to drop

In the Bangkerohan Public Market, the of selected produce dropped last week. The retail price of red onions dropped from P110 to P70/kg. The price of garlic came out at P170/kg from P180/kg and white onions at P65/kg from P70/kg.

Vegetable vendors said the drop in price was due to the arrival of new batch of produce, which were delayed last week because the rainy weather made it difficult for farmers to harvest. Prices dropped this week because the supplies are picking up.

Meanwhile, ginger and tomatoes retained their prices at P120/kg and P20/kg, respectively. However, the retail prices of ginger and red onions was higher than its retail prices in December 2019.

Based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)’s monitoring of agricultural commodities, the retail price of ginger is at P109.98/kg while the red onion is at P195.68/kg. But the retail price of white onion is lower in March 2020 compared to its retail price in December 2019.
