Chinese ports start to clear the backlog of shipping containers

Chinese ports have begun to clear the backlog of shipping containers now that workers are returning to their jobs. The outbreak of the corona virus initially resulted in blocked roads and locked down towns, which prevented workers from returning after Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020] was over. The shortage of manpower resulted in massive backlogs of shipping containers in ports across China.

China is the largest country in terms of loading and unloading shipping containers. China processed nearly 30% of the world's daily shipping traffic in 2019. China processed an average of 715 thousand shipping containers per day. The epidemic severely disturbed the flow of shipping containers. However, as more and more people return to their positions as crane operators, customs agents, tugboat pilots, and other related jobs, the clearance rate in Zhoushan harbor and other Chinese ports has improved.

According to Xu Kai, head of the Shanghai Shipping Information Research Institute, "Chinese ports have already passed the turning point. The backlog is being solved and regular distribution is resuming."
