Barsch GmbH & Co presented new label dispenser for flowpack lines at Fruit Logistica

"Thermal transfer printer enables smooth changeover to direct foil printing without additional machine"

As a result of the current packaging discussion, there is a need for sustainable and as efficient as possible labelling and printing processes. Due to the uncertainty in the market, it is necessary to be able to react quickly to changing requirements. Therefore, modern solutions are required so that no additional equipment needs to be purchased and one can react quickly and easily to the new requirements, according to Nadine Barsch, Managing Director of the company of the same name, based in Reiskirchen. At this year's Fruit Logistica, the company presented a new label dispenser for its own flowpack machines.

With today's flowpack machines (e.g. for salads or herbs), normally there are two ways of dispensing a label: Usually the labels are attached to the pre-fabricated packaging behind the discharge conveyor or directly to the packaging material roll. With the first method, the label is often stuck to the package at an angle. Another problem with this system is that not only the package is detected, but also the cross seam, which is slightly protruding. "As a result, it can happen that more labels are dispensed than required," Ms. Barsch said.

With the second option, the label is dispensed onto the film roll, which means that a lot of labels have to be pre-dispensed when the film is changed or the product changes. No-Product-No-Label is not possible in this case.

Nadine Barsch and Frank Lindenstruth presented the new label dispenser at this year's Fruit Logistica in Berlin.

Modern label printing and dispensing system
"We have now developed a new label printing and dispensing system in the housing under the longitudinal sealing station," Ms. Barsch explains. According to her, the advantages of the new process are numerous. Firstly, the films are more positively guided at this point, which is why the label is dispensed in a nice straight line. In addition, work is carried out according to the no-product-no-label principle, Ms. Barsch describes: "We check whether there is a product in the film tube: if not, we do not donate a label. The large machine doors provide good access to the label printing-dispensing system and at the same time it is protected accordingly."

Furthermore, the labeller can be equipped with any standard thermal transfer printer: This could be removed if necessary so that the foil can be printed directly. "This is a huge advantage when previously only transparent foil and label were used. So it is possible to change over to printed film with direct film printing without additional costs and time expenditure. No additional equipment needs to be purchased and you can react quickly to the new requirements with the same line."

Cost and waste reduction
The new labelling system offers advantages for all types of companies, Ms. Barsch concludes. "The bulk packer saves a lot of labels through no-product-no-label because nothing is wasted anymore. This leads to lower costs and less waste, and less waste is produced due to faulty labelling. For smaller companies, the system impresses with its high flexibility between label print dispensing system and direct printing on the film."
