Competition for Hello Fresh and Co.?

Aldi to sell fresh cooking boxes starting 24 February

A freshly cooked meal, although delicious, is often too time-consuming or hampered by a lack of ideas. ALDI SÜD is therefore introducing cooking boxes from 24 February. With them, tasty recipes such as Moroccan couscous or paella can be created in no time at all. To start with, customers can choose between three different dishes. Complete with all necessary ingredients and step-by-step instructions, nothing stands in the way of home-cooked food.

Quickly cook a meal yourself that is fresh, inexpensive and delicious without having to search for a recipe: That's the promise of the new cooking boxes from ALDI SÜD. Even on the packaging, each of the cooking boxes provides information about the time of preparation and the cooking time. The recipes and quantities in the cooking box are designed for two people, thus preventing food from being wasted. Even for customers with little cooking experience, the dishes are quick and easy to prepare. In the store, customers will find the cooking boxes on the fruit & vegetable shelves - matching the fresh contents of the boxes. Exceptions are chilled products such as meat or milk. This eliminates the tedious search for ingredients in the store. During the promotional period from 24 to 28 February 2020, a box costs 3.33 euros, and afterwards the price will be 4.49 euros.

Four-month test run
"Through these cooking boxes, we want to give our customers the opportunity to simply eat a balanced diet and cook fresh. Perhaps we will be able to convince less ambitious hobby cooks with the boxes," says Christoph Wenig, Corporate Buying Director at ALDI SÜD. The cooking boxes will initially be offered in all branches for four months as part of a test.

To make cooking even easier in the future, ALDI SÜD is offering video cooking instructions for each dish. This can be accessed via the QR code on the packaging. If the customer scans the code, he can watch a video of the preparation of the recipe online. To start the campaign, the cooking boxes are available for preparing green curry with coconut milk, a tomato and pepper soup and lasagne. After that, the dishes will change monthly.
