The Ministry of Commerce and Industries (MICI) of Panama stated that the main markets for Panamanian MD2 Golden pineapple currently were Turkey, the United States, the Netherlands, Belgium, Germany, and Spain. Between January and November 2019, sales to Turkey amounted to 1.7 million dollars, while sales to the United States and the Netherlands totaled 1.6 and 1.3 million dollars, respectively, stated the National Directorate for the Promotion of Exports of the MICI.
Despite its recent incursion in China, the Panamanian pineapple also managed to impose itself in that market, where until November of last year it registered transactions for 201,000 dollars. The country also exports its pineapples to other countries, such as Jordan, the United Kingdom, Lebanon, Ukraine, and Chile.
The president of the Panamanian Association of Exporters, Roberto Tribaldos, told the newspaper La Prensa that Europe was a market for the export of high-end products such as fresh pineapple. He highlighted the record shipment of 1,260 boxes of this pineapple variety that the Verba Odrec company performed last week by air to Spain, from where it will be sent to France, Italy, and Germany, according to Hipolito Vergara, that company's director of operations.
During 2019, this company exported 1.6 million kilograms of pineapple, 300,000 of which were shipped by air; this year, the company intends to increase these figures by almost 60%, Vergara said.
According to the source, there are 46 producers in the country who grow 1,110 hectares of this product for export and that expect to reverse the drastic 67% drop that the sector has registered since 2014 due to the lack of policies of the two previous administrations.
A market investigation of the Global Industry Analysts firm revealed that dehydrated fruits, including pineapple, currently have great export potential, so world consumption of these products would grow to four million tons by 2020.
