Due to the 14th being Valentine’s Day, retailers targeted last-minute shoppers with tempting deals on all the ingredients for a romantic home-cooked meal in celebration of the holiday. Specialty cuts of meat shared front page space with asparagus, potatoes, onions, bell peppers, apples, grapes and strawberries.
Total ad numbers this week were 342,780, a 1% increase from last week’s 340,194. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 184,793 (54% of all ads), onions and potatoes 28,791 (8%), vegetables 116,153 (34%), herbs 616 and ornamentals 12,299 (4%). The number of ads for organic produce was 49.496, 14% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Pink Lady apples and 6 oz blueberries both at 17%, cantaloupes at 15%, and Navel oranges at 14%. Significant decreases included Honeycrisp apples at 24%, and strawberries at 14%. There were no significant increases for onions and potatoes this week.
Significant decreases included yellow onions per lb and 5 lb bags of Russet potatoes both at 13% and red onions at 10%. There were no significant increases for vegetables this week. Significant decreases included baby peeled carrots at 21%, cauliflower at 16%, and asparagus at 13%.
