Chinese fruit farmers find a way to combat financial loss due to virus

Rather than cave in to the inevitable fears of a modern-day epidemic, some of China’s fruit farmers decided to think outside the box. They have found a way around coronavirus to reach their market.

Fruit farmers in a city in southwest China’s Sichuan Province decided to market their products online via video conferencing, highlighting “no contact” harvesting. In Meishan City, for instance, companies are pushing through with sales of citrus fruits via a method that requires as little human contact as possible, or what it calls a “no-contact” sales model, the report said.

Asiatimes.com explains how business partners use video conferencing to remotely discuss cooperation possibilities, visit the far bases, and monitor fruit-picking, the report said. The online video conferencing is in line with China’s “new retail” model of integrating the online and physical store channels into one.

Bulk procuring of citrus fruits have also changed. According to Sichuan Sande E-commerce Co. Ltd., data and samples on citrus fruits are sent via express delivery to major supermarkets in Sichuan.

Comprehensive database of citrus genomic variations launched
At the same time, but on a more scientific note, a comprehensive database of citrus genomic variations has been launched. Xinhuanet.com referenced a recent research article published in the journal Horticulture Research.

Citrus is one of the most important commercial fruit crops worldwide, said the article. With the vast genomic data available for citrus, genetic relationships and molecular markers can be assessed for the development of molecular breeding and genomic selection strategies for the fruit.

The researchers from the Citrus Research Institute under the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Sciences and Southwest University developed the citrus genomic variation database CitGVD which is an open-access resource centered on 1.49 billion high-quality genomic variations of 346 organisms.

The CitGVD integrates closely related information on genomic variation annotations, related gene annotations and details regarding the organisms, incorporating a variety of unique and powerful built-in tools for data accession and in-depth analysis.
