On the onion market it has become a lot quieter now that the export to Africa is largely done. "There are still some smaller orders for Africa, but that does not provide the packers with enough work. Exports to the Far East are still running reasonably well, but we must not have it at the moment in Europe," notes Rene Tiggelman of Trading Company van Langevelde in Kruiningen, The Netherlands.
"How the market will proceed further is not clear at the moment. There are many uncertainties above the market. What is Brazil going to do? and what will be the impact of the problems in China. If China no longer exports, that could offer opportunities for the export of Dutch onions. We do need such windfalls at the moment," says the exporter.
"In recent years, we have to talk about the first half of the season.
That used to be the other way around, but since the export to Russia has disappeared that is the reality. "
The price started last week to a level around 16 cents for medium sorting and 18/19 cents for the large onions. "A bit lower than two weeks ago, but the farmer is not so keen on selling the onions now," says Rene. Qualitatively, there is sufficient availability of onions.
