"We have had so many enquiries that we are pleased to be back on the market with the first volumes of Formosa Papaya from week 7 onwards," says Leon van den Hombergh of the Venlo-based company Frankort & Koning. "Formosa Papaya has made a name for itself on the market in a very short time, and the retail trade would be hard to imagine without it. In addition, these papayas are in line with the current trend of healthy eating."
New cultivation areas for export
The papayas are sourced from the northeast of Brazil, where the new cultivation areas are currently ready to start. The fruits are harvested when half ripe and have to be carefully transported, quickly transshipped and sold. Papayas picked too early remain green and no longer ripen. The fruit usually arrives at the market ready to eat and has only a short consumption period. Although the fruit is very sensitive to pressure, small brown spots do not mean there is a reduction in quality.
