Swiss mushroom producers were able to increase sales of mushrooms last year. The market for mushrooms remained stable in terms of volume, with more organic mushrooms more in demand than Suisse Garantie mushroom.
Swiss mushroom producers were able to increase sales of Champignons Suisses Edelpilzen in 2019 by 13% to 385 tonnes compared to the previous year, writes the Swiss Mushroom Producers Association (VSP) in a press release. Producers of pearl oyster and king oyster mushrooms could increase their sales, while shiitake sales remained constant compared to the previous year.
With a slightly growing mushroom market in 2019, sales of Swiss mushrooms remained stable for the first time compared to the previous year at just under 7,130 tonnes. There was a shift within the sales volume from Suisse Garantie to Swiss organic mushrooms.
Critical of Migros
The Association of Swiss Mushroom Producers VSP is critical of the retail price reduction of Migros in week 35/2019, as Fritz Burkhalter, Secretary VSP, explains. On the one hand, the price reduction had not led to any effective increase in sales, on the other hand it put producer prices under unnecessary pressure. The same quantity at a lower price and with a smaller margin cannot work out for the producers. The PP emphasizes that it is striving for partnership-based, sales-increasing solutions in order to ensure the economic viability of Swiss production.
