The La Santa Cruz Small Producers Association, which was founded in 2007, presented to the Government a project for the installation of a banana chip production plant in the Dominican province of Valverde. The 112 members of the association currently have 975 hectares of bananas under production, scattered on the Northwest line, and export an average of 23 containers of 1,000 boxes per week.
The representatives of the association presented their proposal directly to the president of the nation, Danilo Medina, and requested support for the installation of the chip-producing plant. After the meeting, the Government notified them that the Special Fund for Agricultural Development (FEDA) will finance the project, along with other infrastructure works in the province. A total of RD $19.1 million will be financed at an annual rate of 5%, the lowest in the market, and the remaining money needed for the project, 17.2 million, will be donated by the State.
This new project will add value to the association's banana production and improve the income and living conditions of the producers.
