As avocado consumption is increasing, it’s only logical that the individual quick frozen (IQF) avocado sees its market share increase as well. This makes sense considering fresh avocado can be challenging to handle for consumers.
According to Ruben Larsson, founder of OctoFrost, IQF frozen avocados bring a lot of advantages for the consumers, especially when considering the shelf life. “Consumers are able to buy pre-ripened avocados at a higher price. For fresh avocados, the shelf life is about one to two days. However it frequently is the case that avocados are already overripe on the day of purchase. The other option is to buy a green avocado and finish the ripening process at home. Hitting the right ripening for consumption is often a gamble, and the result is a discolored product with a different flavor.”
“Frozen at its peak of ripeness, IQF avocado is sold to consumers in bags or boxes. Thanks to the IQF OctoFrost Technology, one can freeze ripe avocados at its source. This way consumers are guaranteed to enjoy a quality product that maintained its full flavor, while containing the maximum amount of nutrients, maintains its natural appearance, texture and smell,” Larsson explains. “It’s easy to grab the required amount of avocado for the meal, keep it at room temperature for about 15 minutes and it’s ready to be consumed! On top of that, the shelf life for IQF Avocado is over six months.”
Larsson feels their solution can be applied to most businesses: “Cutting the product while it has a lower temperature will result in better product appearance. The chilling ice-cold water in the OctoFrost™ Chillers reduces the core temperature of avocado to less than 5°C, which allows for an even cut and effective IQF freezing. It doesn’t matter of the production rate is large is smaller, OctoFrost™ can provide solutions for both small and large productions.”
“The OctoFrost™ solution offers unique features, which allow for good separation of the avocado and its characteristics without causing any damage to it. This applies for halved and even sticky diced or sliced avocado,” Larsson states. “Our new technology has managed to push the costs per kg down even lower, and the yield is higher than other similar technologies on the market. We have customers in the Americas, Africa, and Asia who have already experienced the benefits of these features. They are willing to share experiences in freezing different varieties of avocado, even if Hass is predominant.”
