Last year, agricultural producers in Turkmenistan had a good harvest of melons, fruits and vegetables and legumes. The private sector played a significant role in strengthening the potential of the agro-industrial sector and the implementation of state programs for the reduction of imports and the increase of exports.
According to the Union of Industrialists and Entrepreneurs of Turkmenistan (SPIT), most food products are grown by private farms and business entities. In 2019, they produced over 26 thousand tons of tomatoes, 14.5 thousand tons of gourds, more than 7 thousand tons of fruit and berry products and 6.4 thousand tons of legumes.
Turkmeni entrepreneurs are working to increase food production through the development of new lands, the expansion of the acreage devoted to orchards and vineyards, and the increase in the number of greenhouses. This is creating the conditions for the saturation of the domestic market and the growth of exports. In fact, in 2019, agricultural products worth more than $ 25 million were sold to the Russian Federation and other CIS countries.
In 2019, tomato shipments abroad increased significantly. The export volume of this vegetable crop stood at about 16 thousand tons last year. Many farms specialize in year-round protected tomato cultivation using innovative plant care technologies.
Over the past year, more than 6 thousand tons of fruits and melons and about 4 thousand tons of legumes have been exported.
