"The export volume of our Musang King durian steadily grows"

The durian is a popular fruit in the Chinese market. Malaysia has more than 200 durian varieties, but one stands out among all others. The Musang King durian is the most popular variety in the Chinese market. China gave Malaysia permission to export whole, frozen durian to the Chinese market in 2019. Since then, Chinese consumer demand for durian rapidly increased.

Wu Zong of Medill, recently talked about the arrival of their first shipment of durian this year: "We are one of the companies that import durian via air freight through Zhengzhou Airport. Our first durian shipment of this year arrived on January 7th. We are quite proud of this achievement. Our company team has a lot of experience with durian import from Malaysia. And we are happy to see the market develop so quickly. Our import volume grows by 30% per year. That is an impressive pace of development."


k The fresh durian have to be completely frozen before they are allowed into China. Import companies therefore require a lot of preparation to guarantee that the products arrive without a problem and meet all the relevant standards.

According to Wu Zhong, "We have our own processing facilities abroad to make sure our fruit products meet export standards. After we process the fruit, we then export to China. We use refrigerated transport to make sure the fruit is kept at the right temperature during the journey. Upon arrival in China the fruit is transferred to refrigerated storage facilities at the airport. We then distribute the frozen durian from the airport to various markets in China. The refrigerated warehouses at the airport can reach temperatures of minus 33 degrees Celsius. This makes the warehouses extremely suitable for our kind of import and export business. Refrigerated storage allows us to effectively control the temperature and the product quality of our durian."

"Cherries are currently the most popular fruit in the Chinese market, but durian still occupy quite an important position. We do not think these two fruits will significantly affect each other in the Chinese fruit market. Looking at the price, durian transported via air freight have a higher cost price than the durian that arrive in China via sea freight. Our products are therefore a bit more expensive than most durian, but not so expensive that we can not compete in the Chinese market."
