"The Guanxi honey pomelo trademark was registered in 2003. Since then, the overall surface area devoted to honey pomelo production in Fujian production areas has grown larger every year. There are more and more Chinese companies who produce honey pomelo for export, so that the supply volume greatly exceeds demand in overseas markets. As a result, the export price of honey pomelo drops further every year." Manager Zhang of Pinghe Huaermei Fruit Industry Co., Ltd. recently talked about the current conditions in the Guangxi honey pomelo market and recent conditions in the export market in the last few years.
"This production season was relatively poor. The production volume of Guanxi honey pomelo was much smaller than last year. The pomelo trees produced only a small number of flowers during the blossom season. Furthermore, later in the season the production areas suffered from heavy rainfall. Many of the pomelo split open. The overall production volume dropped by nearly 50%. Fresh pomelo from the new production season will enter the market in August, and based on current conditions, we expect the production volume to be much larger than this season. As for the price, honey pomelo were quite expensive earlier this season, but the price declined halfway through the season, and then slightly recovered towards the end of the season. The current price of white Guanxi pomelo is around 500-600 USD per ton. The current price of red Guanxi pomelo is around 800-900 USD per ton. Since the production volume was much smaller this season, the relation between supply and demand is more balanced, and the price of white Guangxi pomelo is therefore much higher than around this time last year."
"The main export markets for our honey pomelo are in Europe and Canada. We also export a small volume of pomelo to Southeast Asia. Our annual production volume is around 3-4 thousand tons," explained manager Zhang.
"We mainly wholesale our pomelo, but we also sell a small volume directly to supermarkets. Earlier this season, we mostly sold pomelo in boxes of 11 kg, but later in the season we switched to boxes of 12 kg. Overseas customers not only required higher product quality in recent years, but they also pay more attention to high-grade packaging in order to increase the value of their brand. We are also working hard to improve the quality of our packaging, in particular for premium pomelo aimed at high-end markets."
Huaermei Fruit Industry owns a plantation that covers 13 hectares. "We own our plantations and we constructed processing factories to reduce the cost of middlemen. This allows us to keep the price low."
The company will attend the Berlin Fruit Logistica on February 5-7. Their stand is in hall 27 at booth F03d.
