Turkish cherry exporter prepares for cherry season; buys new sorting machine

“This cherry season will be all about China”

China will be the most important factor in the 2020 cherry season in Turkey, one exporter claims. After having invested heavily into a new high-tech sorting machine, the company feels they’re fully prepared to take advantage of the Chinese demand for cherries.

Turkey is preparing for an intense cherry season. According to Yigit Gokyigit, Sales and Marketing coordinator at Turkish fruit exporter Alanar, China will play a key role in the 2020 season. “Last season the protocols had been adjusted, allowing us to enter the Chinese market for the first time. However the level of fumigation needed had an impact on the quality. This year, we’re better prepared as we now know we will be able to export to China ahead of the start of the season.”

The Chinese seem to have no limits on the volumes they want the Turkish exporter to ship their way. “It’s happened last season and we’re already getting requests this season as well; to send all of our produce. The full one-hundred per cent. Naturally are prepared to accept these inquiries, but we will keep our markets in Europe. It has meant we could increase our production with a wider point of view and action plan. We expect about 25 per cent of our total production will be exported to China in 2020, so the market will be a very important one to us.” Gokyigit said.

The Turkish cherry season will start in May. To have the best position possible, Alanar has decided to invest in new machinery. “We’ve ordered a high-tech sorting machine from Italy for the 2020 cherry season. This is the most advanced machine for our sector. The machine will be installed and ready before the cherry season begins. It helps our company in multiple ways, next to increasing the quality of our offering. The new machine will decrease required labor in general and with it, labor costs. Alanar will be the only company to own a high-tech technology in Turkey at this level in sorting machines.”

Gokyigit is looking forward to exhibiting in Berlin, during Fruit Logistica. “We have already started the 365 days-a-year global fig program. Delivering on our promise we made last year, we’re able to supply figs all year round from various countries other than Turkey. For example, we’re supplying figs all year round to the market. We are supporting a social awareness programme for the consumers to make figs easily accessible and eat more fresh fruit. Fruit Logistica will be a great opportunity to meet all of our main customers. But we’d also like to meet contact to finally increase our market share in the Canadian market.” Gokyigit concludes.

You can find Alanar at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, Hall 1.1, Stand #C-09.
