Ellen van Kester (Horticola Guadalfeo) about new Maximo tomato:

"Besides blue and greenish-pink, we now have brownish-black tomatoes in our range"

Until Christmas, the Spanish greenhouse vegetable season appeared to be progressing normally. This is according to Ellen van Kester of Horticola Guadalfeo from Motril, Spain. "There were no large surpluses or shortages, and prices were reasonable. However, right before Christmas, production increased considerably."

"We always say there is an increase in sales over the festive season. We indeed sell a little more. But, on the other hand, it is difficult to maintain a good balance between production and sales just before the holidays."

"The transportation issues also play a role. There are very few vehicles available, especially for international transport. There are currently too many Coeur de Boeuf and other brown/black tomatoes varieties on the market," says Ellen.

Horticola Guadalfeo is specialized in unusual tomatoes. "We have been the exclusive sellers of the blue Marazul tomato for several years now. It has been a success, and this variety has its own share in the market. Another tomato is very new - the Cherokee. This tomato is striking because of its striped green and pink color. It also has a delicate peel and aromatic flavor when it ripens," explains Van Kester.

"A few months ago, we started with the new 'Maximo' tomato. This is a brownish-black variety that fits in well with our assortment. This tomato has a higher Brix level than similar tomatoes. It also has a subtle taste," concludes Ellen.
