Strong need for Express Sea Route from Mexico to Northern Europe

To start the new year on a strong note, UPM and Apeajal organized an agro-exporters meeting with the main goal of the pre-registration of avocado exporters from Mexico to Europe. It is now crystal clear that both importers from Europe and exporters from Mexico urgently require the direct shipping route. During this meeting, participants from several avocado producing states committed with their weekly export volumes to Europe to work together and be integrated in the UPM program. Among the large-volume-to Europe exporters from Jalisco were D´Eliseos, Mevi, Grupo Roquin, Agro Gonzamex, Cerritos as well as other companies.

Ignacio Gomez, director of Apeajal, the association of avocado growers and packhouses from the state of Jalisco, Mexico, stressed the importance of a direct sea route, as this will reduce significantly the sea days and allow exporters from Mexico to become more competitive on the European avocado market as well as receive faster returns on their export efforts.

Lia Bijnsdorp, managing director of UPM Europe from the Netherlands, is coordinating the program in partnership with Aktion Trade with Mexican exporters and European importers. Now the market intel about the current export volumes to Europe is complete. The coordination of the program is focused on all agro-sectors from Mexico for fresh as well as for frozen products.

She also mentioned that through this coordinated program that integrates exporters into a network structure, the new sea route is becoming slowly a reality. For this purpose, other exporters can pre-register through the UPM website to be included in this program for the Express Sea Route: https://www.upmeurope.nl/registro-ruta-maritima-mxeuropa

There were also the presentations from Yemil Zarzar from Control Union with the Quality Inspection Program in origin and destination for exporters as well as Carlos Quintana from HortiMaq with the presentations of the Otflow and Liquidseal products, as important added value products for fresh fruit exporters.

The export volumes registered during the meeting in Cd. Guzman are substantial enough to start the Direct Sea Route from Mexico to Europe. UPM has now completed the market information from both the European importers and the Mexican exporters, and the results will be presented to the carriers interested in starting this new route.
