The comment of Marco Babbi of Finò

Consumption in slight recovery: a little optimism for the fennel

"After the holidays, there is always an increase in fennel consumption. It is almost physiological. With good reason, consumers who see this vegetable as ideal for a healthier diet after the Christmas period are probably increasing".

Marco Babbi, sales manager of Caligari&Babbi, specialist in Finò-branded fennel, comments the current situation. "We are now entering the height of the season and we have 5 months of marketing ahead of us. We start from this assumption: there is a lot, a lot of product. There were no weather disasters last year, so the production is considerable".

Quality is what matters, because the high temperatures caused an advance and a rush to the maturation of the product. And not everyone has been able to handle it. "The advantage of being specialists in a product - he adds - is the ability to know how to manage it even in the most complicated moments. This is what differentiates us, and the manufacturing companies we work with, from all the others".

At the moment, the prices in the countryside are not satisfactory. "We are just above the threshold. But the signs of these days are encouraging. We also work a lot with foreign traders and we have consolidated and reliable clients with respect to which we have agreements that guarantee us a certain stability, without too many oscillations," concludes Babbi.

The quality of the fennel, almost everywhere, has improved in the last 8-10 days thanks to the temperatures that have dropped in many areas. Cold and dry air facilitates product management and improves its quality.
