Market Report Austria KW 02/2020:

'Potato market starts the year without major changes - satisfactory onion sales'

The Austrian market for table potatoes is starting 2020 without any major changes, and the food retail trade was quite satisfied with the Christmas sales this year. Traditionally, domestic sales are expected to slow down again after the holidays. Overall, however, domestic sales are well on target. There are still no positive reports from the export side. Although there are inquiries, actual deals are hardly made due to the internationally more favorable price level. This is unlikely to change in the coming weeks.

The constant demand is matched by a sufficient supply. Producer prices start the new year unchanged. At the beginning of the week, in Lower Austria, a price range of 22 to 28 Euro/100 kg depending on variety and quality was mentioned. From Upper Austria, unchanged prices of up to 28 euro/100 kg were reported.

Satisfactory onion sales
The Austrian onion market is starting the new year quite well-balanced. Domestic demand has calmed down somewhat after the satisfactory Christmas business. In the next few weeks, however, sales are expected to return to normal levels. The export business has traditionally been on the back burner between the Christmas holidays. Here too, a new impetus is expected in the coming weeks. There are no real price changes. For onions, cleaned and sorted in the box, between 23 and 28 euros/100 kg were paid for, given the appropriate quality and size. For qualitatively weaker or smaller lots the price levels are lower.

Carrot market optimistic
The Lower Austrian carrot market is starting the new year with cautious optimism. Domestic demand is showing steady signs of recovery following a thoroughly satisfactory Christmas trade. Exports are going out again and again. There is no change in prices for the time being. However, a price increase is likely in the coming weeks.
