In 2019, Ukraine imported a record volume of bananas, with a 8-9% increase compared to 2018, reaching 270,000-275,000 tons. This was reported in a statement issued by the Fruits and Vegetables Association of Ukraine.
According to this Association, in 2019 each Ukrainian citizen consumed an average of more than 6 kg of bananas.
At the same time, the size of the Ukrainian banana market is greater than that of apples in terms of value.
In addition to bananas, Ukraine's imports of other tropical fruits are also on the rise. The list includes mandarins, oranges, lemons, grapefruits, kakis, kiwifruit, avocados, pineapples, mangoes, etc.
The report says that the strengthening of the grivna, the Ukrainian currency, against the dollar and the Euro is playing an important role in this. Moreover, the imports are interesting for both supermarkets and a new generation of young consumers who are looking for new flavors and want to try new, often exotic products.
