Uncertainty in the development of Spanish avocado prices

Upturn in mango sales after a quiet December

2019 came to a close with a quieter subtropical fruits market than is usual for December. "Sales tend to fall at that time of the year, but not as much as this time," said José Antonio Alconchel, manager of the Malaga-based company Alcoaxarquía. “In the case of mangoes, there was supply in Europe from many origins in the two hemispheres, including some unusual ones. This led to speculation and price rises. Now the demand seems to be reactivating again,” he said.

According to the producer and exporter, the Spanish mango campaign finished in early December with volumes above estimates and stable prices. “Eventually, the mango harvest in Spain was about 10% greater than the sector expected. The prices were stable, although not consistent with the lack of production we have had. It seems that the proximity of Spanish mangoes is no longer as appreciated as it used to, at least in the large retail sector. Subtropical product sales increasingly rely on prices, with the exception of more specialized stores.

Alcoaxarquía, which also has a subsidiary in Peru (Alcoaxarquía Peru), started selling the Peruvian production in week 51 with a lack of large sizes, although there appears to have been some recovery in this sense. "Fortunately, the taste and quality of the product are very acceptable."

Meanwhile, the Spanish Hass avocado campaign, which started in December, is now in full swing. “There is uncertainty about prices, which started very high at the beginning of the campaign and quickly fell due to the abundance of avocados from more than 8 different origins,” says Juan Antonio Alconchel. In March, Alcoaxarquía will start with the marketing of Peruvian avocados.
