“The French kiwi campaign is starting slowly,” according to José Illan, commercial director of the Tresacois farm located in the south of France. “The market is not very active yet because other origins are still available, like Greece and Italy, but we really hope to switch to the French origin within a couple of weeks. The purchasing centers are already asking for samples.”
Buying local
Tresacois mostly sells kiwis on the French market. “It is known that French consumers find it important to buy local products. It is true that the market is quite receptive to national products. However, we must not underestimate the importance of prices. There is always a price gap between French kiwis and the foreign production, and this does not help the campaign to start.”
According to José, the quality of the kiwis is there. “The brix rate is above 13/13.5.” Calibers are small for the most part. “I think this is due to the drought. There are also some large calibers available, but not a lot yet. We are talking about just a few pallets a day.”
Tresacois markets French kiwis until mid-March. “We are ready to serve our clients in France, as well as in export.”
