"Market price of Chinese garlic is rising again"

The market price of Chinese garlic has gradually stabilized in the last two months. However, since the middle of December, the garlic price has begun to rise again. Mr. Zhang Shuhan of Jining Greenstream Fruits and Vegetables Co., Ltd. shared his views on the conditions in the Chinese garlic market.

"There are two main reasons for the rising price of Chinese garlic. The volume of overseas orders grows around New Year. As for the domestic market, Chinese garlic traders are extremely optimistic about the market conditions around Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. They expect the Chinese garlic price to maintain this upward trend in the days leading up to Spring Festival. Most traders are unwilling to sell their garlic now. They are waiting for the price to keep rising. Market supply is therefore quite low at the moment," explained Mr. Zhang. "We expect the strong market conditions and the rising price to continue until around Spring Festival."

"The Chinese garlic price slowly began to rise about three weeks ago. The current market price of fresh garlic is around 7.4 yuan [1.07 USD] per kg, while the price of old garlic is around 5.4 yuan [0.78 USD] per kg. This is more or less the same as around the same time last year. As for garlic in storage, the national reserve of garlic is around 2.5 million tons, which is more than sufficient supply. About 100 thousand tons of the national reserve consists of old garlic from 2018," explained Mr. Zhang.

"The old garlic has been in storage for a long time and the shelf life is growing shorter. If the garlic spends too much time in transportation, then the product quality upon arrival can not be guaranteed. We therefore advise our overseas customers to purchase fresh garlic. We can only sell the old garlic in the domestic market for a relatively low price."
