As reported at the end of December by the Protected Designation of Origin Uva de mesa del Vinalopó, the POD bagged table grape campaign has come to a close this year with a production totalling 46 million kilos, somewhat lower than in 2018.
The production is intended for both for the domestic market - approximately 60% of the total - and for the European Union and third countries, such as Canada or South Africa. The season has been marked by profitability problems linked to the rise in the price of agricultural insurance, as well as to weather adversities and complications in the marketing.
In spite of this, the Regulatory Council believes that the maintenance in the number of operators that have marketed grapes during two consecutive campaigns is a positive fact, since it reaffirms the efforts that have been carried out to improve the market positioning of the PDO-protected grapes.
Of the total production recorded in 2019, 50% corresponds to the Aledo variety, which has been marketed since the beginning of November and is the one used in New Year's Eve. It is estimated that two out of every three grapes consumed on 31 December came from Medio Vinalopó. Specifically, from the area that includes the municipalities of Aspe, Novelda, Hondón de las Nieves, Hondón de los Frailes, Monforte del Cid, Agost and La Romana.
