Golden Foods, a company from Murcia located in Las Torres de Cotillas, sent for the first time several shipments of its 12 grapes and peeled and seedless grapes cans to Portugal for the celebration of New Year's Eve, stated the general director of the company, Isabel Guillamon. The company expects that sales of its 12 canned grapes increase by nearly 5% in Christmas 2019, with a volume that can reach up to three million units. According to data from the company, they are leaders in their category and are in almost all of the large surfaces, where they don't face any competition from any other brand in the category.
Murcia leads in the sale of seedless grapes
The Region of Murcia is, according to the president of the Association of Fruit, Table Grape, and Other Agricultural Products Producers and Exporters (Apoexpa), Joaquin Gomez, the producer of 90% of the seedless grape varieties of Spain, and responsible for exporting 4,000 tons of grapes to celebrate the end of 2019. According to Apoexpa data, 140,000 tons of seedless grapes from Murcia were exported in 2019, and 14,000 tons were destined for the internal market.
Vinalopo, a classic grape
The Aledo grape variety from Alicante, which is protected by the protected designation of origin PDO Grape of Mesa Embolsada del Vinalopo, continues to be a classic option to celebrate the end of the year in Spain.
The president of this PDO, Jose Bernabeu, estimates that supermarkets, hypermarkets, and fruit stores will sell some 2,000 tons of this grape by December 31; a figure that is similar to the one achieved in 2018, as the DANA has not affected the production of this late variety.
Bernabeu acknowledged that the Aledo grape had been sold cheaper in the field in this campaign but stated that they were not sure why prices decreased. However, he said, this decrease in prices might be due to a lack of demand caused by the way this thin-skinned fruit is packed.
