Gerry Li, Rida Trade:

“2019 was an exceptional year for ginger”

The 2019 ginger year will be remembered as exceptional. “The harvest in China was not as good as expected,” says Gerry Li. Li is the Sales Manager at produce wholesaler, Rida Trade. This company is located in Poeldijk, the Netherlands.

“It was 20 to 30% lower. This caused prices to rise at the beginning of the year. Within a few weeks, prices had shot up to €35. This kind of situation is truly exceptional. We will probably not experience anything like this again.”

“I expect the market to be stable and rise in the coming weeks. Prices are currently at around €21-23. I expect the price will be higher when Brazilian ginger out of the market."

Rida Trade has been active in the Netherlands since 2010. This company growing ginger in China, pack and deliver ginger to ABC Westland Poeldijk, with their own facility to store and repack all the ginger, not only Chinese ginger, also from Brazil, Peru and Thailand,. "You can get all varieties of ginger from one company."

They also sell an extensive assortment of Chinese produce. This range consists of sweet potatoes, garlic, mushrooms, chestnuts, Nashi pears, and eddoes. Ginger is, however, their main product. Rida Trade’s Chinese ginger is supplemented by ginger from Thailand, Peru, and Brazil. The company imported about 1,000 containers of ginger last year. Of this, 20% was organic. “We repackage this ginger into any desired size, our packing team can pack 26-30 pallets a day,” continues Gerry.

Peruvian ginger was very expensive last year. The quality of the ginger from Brazil left something to be desired too. Li, therefore, expects more opportunities in the European market for Chinese ginger next year.
