Pre-Christmas season at Link Gemüse

Regionality trumps specialities

The winter classics are also this year's top sellers in the pre-Christmas season: root vegetables, lamb's lettuce and citrus. This is very noticeable in the Nuremberg area, at Link Gemüse. The family business sells vegetables from its own cultivation and especially from the region but also imported goods in the farm shop and as a partner for gastronomers.

"Our particularly delicious potatoes, red cabbage, carrots, Brussels sprouts and freshly harvested lamb's lettuce are very popular in the farm shop. For root vegetables, beetroot and parsnips are currently the favourites and are often in demand, The root vegetables are exclusively from our own cultivation or regionally from the garlic country," Kathrin Ehret says. The shortage of lamb's lettuce in Germany has not yet been noticed: "Since we grow the lettuce ourselves, the goods are of course readily available."

Old vegetable varieties are increasingly finding their way back onto the plates and into the hearts of consumers: "Parsnips, turnips, root parsley. The abundance of nutrients, the health-promoting effect on the body and, of course, the intensive taste convince our customers. But also the increased demand for regional produce. Caterers are also making increasing use of these vegetables again."

At Christmas time, both gastronomers and the consumers are looking for special or unusual products. "Extraordinary at this time of year is that we can also offer regional tomatoes and cucumbers from the neighbouring village."

Southern fruits should not be missing in the farm shop during the Christmas season: "We have pineapple, mango and persimmon in our assortment, but also citrus fruits. Passion fruit is becoming more and more important. There are no preferences among the countries of origin, only the quality is important here. We pay attention to particularly high quality in the selection of tropical fruits. Countries of origin are Italy and Spain, but also Costa Rica and Brazil, to name but a few."
