Excessive rainfall in production areas in Sichuan have affected the growth of many tangerine varieties. The harvest season of Baba tangerines and Aiyuan tangerines was delayed because of the weather, and the flavor of many tangerine varieties is below the level of last year. Market supply is also slower than last year. This is the time of year when production areas in Sichuan grow and harvest tangerines. "The sales period of Aiyuan tangerines in production areas is almost over. Although the Aiyuan tangerine harvest was abundant, the overcast and rainy weather conditions caused many tangerines to rot. The product quality is much lower than last year. This had a definite affect on the retail conditions. As for the price, last year the price of Aiyuan tangerines was as high as 7-8 yuan [1-1.14 USD] per 0.5 kg at the end of the sales season, but this season the price is only 5-6 yuan [0.71-0.86 USD] per 0.5 kg now. That is a price decrease of 30% in comparison with last year. Even though the price is low, the sales speed is still not as fast as last year. There are still many tangerines left in storage," explained manager Tan.
"In recent years the harvest season of Baba tangerines took place in early December. This year the harvest season was delayed because of excessive rainfall. The harvest is expected to start officially on December 20th. The rainfall has done damage, and the tangerines are slow to develop. They are still quite sour with a measured sugar content of only 12%-13%," stated manager Tan. "Many farmers in the area are hesitant. They wait and see how the market will develop. Personally, I think that the price of Baba tangerines will be much lower than last year because the market conditions are less than ideal and the Aiyuan tangerines have not yet completely left the market. That means both tangerine varieties will be for sale at the same time, and excessive tangerine supply will lower the price."
