“The Jonagold apple is having a hard time this year. Due to the late colouring, it was only possible to pick later and that has an effect on the quality, "says Anthony Maes of Maes Fruitexpress from Ardooie. “Fortunately, good batches are available, but the price difference is huge. If the market is not going to be flooded with Jonagold, I expect the price for the good batches to continue. "
Due to the lower quality and the competition from the import apples, the demand for Jonagold is lagging somewhat this year. “Golden and Boskoop, on the other hand, are doing well this year. Although these apples are somewhat smaller in size than other years, the demand is good. However, it is just a bit more difficult to get large sizes for export, "says Anthony. “I see no problems for pears this year. The quality is good, as well as the demand. We export a lot to the north of France and we can sell a lot of pears there this year. "
Soft fruit
“Our assortment consists only of Belgian fruit. In addition to apples and pears, we also have soft fruit in our range. Raspberries are currently doing well, but the differences in prices are very large. We also have some differences in quality and price in strawberries, but demand is good. Certainly as we get closer to the Christmas period, the demand for soft fruit is increasing again," Maes concludes.
