"The price of Chinese garlic has experienced a number fluctuations in the last few months. In October the price began to climb and this trend continued until this week when the price began to show a downward trend." This is according to Ms. Annie Chen of Jining Fenduni Foodstuff Co., Ltd.
"The overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation declined this year, but the overall production volume of Chinese garlic is still huge. The market is only able to absorb a certain volume of garlic, which means that competition in the garlic market is fierce. The current volume of garlic in storage is also huge. Supply exceeds demand in the domestic market and abroad, but trade will improve around Christmas and the Chinese Spring Festival [25 January, 2020]. Overseas demand also grows around the holidays."
"Chinese garlic does compete with garlic from other countries in the international market, but China has been the market leader for years because the price is reasonable, product quality is high, and supply is stable. Buyers from Europe in particular always maintain strong demand for Chinese garlic."
"It is still too early to tell how the garlic export market will develop next year. This development will depend on the overall surface area devoted to garlic plantation as well as the degree of speculation in the garlic market. The influence of speculation is particularly difficult to predict. We just have to wait and see."
