The Chinese General Administration of Customs (GAC) posted the "Announcement regarding the Quarantine Requirements for Imported Bananas from Mexico" on December 9th, 2019. China and Mexico entered initial negotiations in the first half of this year. This announcement indicates that Mexico has now officially opened the Chinese market for their bananas.
Victor Villalobos Arambula, the Mexican Minister of Agriculture in charge of the trade agreement with China, stated that the trade agreement will benefit banana production areas in Chiapas, Tabasco, and Veracruz. These three areas are responsible for 30%, 27%, and 10% of the Mexican banana production volume respectively.
Data shows that the overall surface area devoted to banana plantation in Mexico exceeds 80 thousand hectares. The country has an annual banana production volume of 2.2 million tons, which is worth 2.5 billion yuan [360 million USD]. The export value of Mexican bananas reached 259 million USD in 2018, which is 1.9% of the global banana export value. Mexico ranks number 12 in the global banana export list. Mexico currently has permission to export five types of fruit to the Chinese market: avocados, grapes, blackberries, raspberries, and blueberries.
