"Total range of peeled onions for the industry"

Erik Mooij and Hans van Kemenade revive Dutch onion company, Jakova

In 2010, Hans van Kemenade and Pierre Sweep took over the Dutch onion peeling company, Jakova, from Jan Koos Valstar. This company has been active in the market since 1948. "Back then, we were fanatical about onions. But, in recent years, we diversified a little.  For example, with vegetable packs for the supermarkets," says Hans.

This branch has since been divested. Jakova has now dedicated itself, with renewed energy, to onions. This time, thanks to a partnership with Erik Mooij of Mooij Vegetables. "We both noticed market developments, seeing that peeled onion activities need full attention. This is true in both Poland and the Netherlands", continues Hans.

"We, therefore, revived the business. This has resulted in Jakova specializing in peeled onions for industrial processors throughout Europe. We began this new adventure on 1 November 2019. We have laid the foundation for the coming years. This is thanks to the new organization and our own good, committed people in Poland," explains Hans.

Jakova is BRC certified at the highest level. It also has a large volume of industrial onions at its disposal. The current range exists of shallots and yellow and red onions. Cooperation with an organic partner is also imminent. Supply in bulk (big bags), as well as 25kg, is possible.

"We buy our Dutch onions for the Polish market from growers and agents. We work based on daily trade as well as longer-term planning through contracts. We can deliver these products punctually. This is possible thanks to the product's year-round availability and good, reliable carriers," concludes Hans.
