Market demand exceeds supply

Production volume of Chinese Gannan Navel oranges decreased by 20%

The harvest season of Gannan Navel oranges begins every year in November. The production volume declined this year because of drought. Although the production volume is small, the oranges are in great demand. Many of the oranges still on the trees are already pre-ordered.

News reports show that Navel orange production declined in many major production areas. The overall surface are devoted to Navel orange production in Huichang County, Jiangxi, reached 13,333 hectares this year. The overall production volume reached 105 thousand tons, which is a decline of 10%. The overall surface area devoted to Navel orange production in Anyuan County, Jiangxi, reached 10,666 hectares. The overall production volume reached 102 thousand tons, which is a decline of more than 20%. However, as the production volume declines, the sales conditions improve. One fruit company spokesperson stated that Navel orange supply is far from able to satisfy market demand. Some Navel oranges are sold while they are still on the tree.

Orange orchards in Jiangxi suffered from high temperatures and drought just when the Navel oranges required large volumes of water. The lack of water affected the development of the oranges. Visiting traders did not wait for the harvest season to begin before they showed up at the gates. Now that the harvest has begun, the freshly harvested oranges go straight from the tree onto a truck for distribution.
