“A balanced campaign for French potatoes”

The French production of storage potatoes reaches 6,341,400 tons this year, compared to 5,962,000 in 2018, which represents a 6% increase in one year. Last year, the production had been strongly impacted by the lower average yield.

The surface areas, which cover 148,290 ha, had increased again by 2.1% in one year. The average gross yield is about 42.8 t/ha for 2019, up 4.4% compared to last year, gaining nearly 2 t/ha in one year, therefore confirming the trends observed in the samples taken by UNPT during vegetation (a better yield than last year, but significantly lower than the multi-year average).

These figures correspond to gross harvested yields, keeping in mind that several hundreds of hectares still need to be harvested in France, because of the successive difficult weather conditions in the fall. The production actually available on the market is between 6,250,000 t and 6,300,000 t. These harvesting difficulties also exist in other European countries.
